Feminism for Girls (Age 11-15)

Feminism for Girls Age: 11-15

July 23rd - July 27th from 6:00PM - 8:30PM.

What does it mean to be a girl?  What does it mean to be a woman (and/or a man)?  What does it mean to be a good person? As a class, we will use the week to explore what the differences are between sex and gender, how we perform and react to gender expression, and how our family, our culture, and the media we consume shapes the way that we understand and perpetuate gender stereotypes.

This class will require minimal outside reading and encourage students to think about excerpts from movies and ads, poetry and novels, as well as current events issues.   Through personal reflection, thoughtful textual analysis, and engaging conversation, students will get to know themselves and their place in their communities better.  Material and discussion will be aimed at specifically toward girls. It is expected that students are aware of the basics regarding sexual reproduction and homosexuality. While the teacher will be sensitive to the age of the students enrolled, it should be understood that certain topics will require some maturity.
