Big Data and Big Lies

Description

Description: If 9 out of 10 doctors agree but science casts some doubt on a subject, does that mean the claim is true or false?  Polls report a rise in public approval for wheels on shoes, but does that mean adults are wearing wheelies?  If crime rates are down, but the news reports on how murders are up, what does that mean?

Join us at Academia as we explore the ways that Big Data can also be the source of Big Lies. In this course, we will explore the statistical tools and ideas behind many reports, developing tools to help unpack (or even prettily re-package) data presented for public consumption.
